There are many themes and motifs in Great Expectations, and some can relate to our lives. One theme In Great Expectations that I can relate to is the theme of Social Class. For example, in school we learn about treating everybody equal and how to treat diversity. Also, a gap in social classes still exist today like they did when Charles Dickens wrote the book. I can relate to Great Expectations by using a similar theme. During Elementary School and part of Middle School, I had the same group of friends. After meeting new people, my group of friends that I was so close to for so long soon became disconnected from me. This relates to Great Expectations because in the beginning of the book, Pip is extremely close to Joe. After Pip moves to London and becomes successful, Pip’s and Joe’s relationship slowly becomes weaker. Joe eventually suggests that change social class has torn them apart. Today in America, there is a large gap between the Lower class, Middle class, and the Upper class. Also, as kids grow up and become more mature, relationships they had with others sometimes fade away or become weaker than they were before, similar to Joe and Pip.
